Harper – 7 Did ok but his distribution like given’s is not up to standard produced 2 excellent saves from Laursen and Reo-Coker.
Carr – 5 To me this guy has to be the worst RB I have ever seen, consistently he never closed his marker, he would stand 5-10 yards away and would allow them to close and close in and this is exactly what happened with Villa’s best chance in the 2nd half and what happened with Giovanni’s goal v Man Utd. Hopefully the reports that Belletti is about to sign can’t come true enough.
Taylor – 7 Solid enough but was troubled by the pace and strength of Villa’s front two. Hopefully he won’t play v Germany as we need him fit for NUFC!
Rozehnal – 7 Same above, no major scares the guy looks very solid and has pace about, a much bigger improvement to the man he replaced.
N’Zogbia – 7 Got forward a lot and seems more like his old self, was caught out of position a few times, but he’s not a LB should slot onto LM when Enrique and Owen are fit for a 442 formation.
Geremi – 6 Poor by his recent standards, passing, crossing way off to his Bolton and friendly games.
Butt – 7 Solid as usual but will give way to when Barton is fit. We need some creativity in midfield.
Smith – 7 Ran his socks off, but quite clearly not fit like the whole squad, missed a good chance.
Milner – 7 Again ran his socks off, but was very isolated in his winger role and consistently doubled marked by villa. Was definitely the best output we had.
Martins – 5.5 Back to his sub-standard away day performances from last season, never wanted to take his man on, and control was shocking.
Viduka - 6 Marked out of the game very well by villa’s CB, but was treated unfairly by the referee. Should play better in 442 formation.
Overall: I’m certainly happy with 4 points from two games, the fans that booed the team off should not return, what are they expecting champions league football?? Yes it was disappointing but we looked more solid, and certainly have key players still to return. Villa came with a game plan and we couldn’t break them down. 4-3-3 doesn’t work at home and Sam knows it, with the returns of Emre, Duff and Barton will add pace and creativity to the midfield, still early days and a good win at Boro will make it a good start to the season. Expect another 2 signings by the 31st of August.
Referee: Howard Webb – 4 Quite shocking 1st ½ performance, with a lot of un-noticed fouls. Got better second half, but all refs are clueless (see Rob Styles Penalty Yesterday)
