After a bursting week of optimism Newcastle United supporters left St James’ park this evening somewhat disenchanted with what was a very average performance. With Obafemi Martins having an ‘off’ day and United’s midfield lacking in creativity and spark the Geordie faithful were left frustrated and annoyed as the points were shared. Villa, to be fair to them, played some decent stuff, and on a whole, defended admirably. Big John Carew caused problems from an aerial point of view and Gabby Agbonlahor’s pace was always freighting, as Martin O’Neill’s men hit United on the break on more than one occasion. Newcastle came closest in the first half as both Mark Viduka and David Rozehnal tested ‘keeper Scott Carson. Villa also had a half chance or two with Ashley Young tormenting Stephen Carr down the left-hand side and Martin Laursen heading straight at Harper.
The second half was a non-event. The closet a goal came was from big moaner Nigel Reo-Coker, his shot saved comfortably by Steve Harper. Newcastle desperately rallied with Villa towards the end but not even a chunkier looking Michael Owen could save a Newcastle United side clearly lacking a creative midfielder. As predicted, the new ‘swipe card’ system failed miserably with many supporters missing the opening ten minutes of the game – more notably in the East Stand. On a positive note, we’ve kept a clean sheet and haven’t been beaten. However, a goal at St James’ park would be nice, it’s been too long since last time (Vs Liverpool, Feb 10th 2007).
