Managerial Merry Go-Round
So who will be first on the premiership manager merry go-round, I will give my opinion on their teams and the chances of being the first in the dole queue.
Arsenal - Arsene Wenger
He is only of around 4-6 managers in the world who are unsackable, this guy in my eyes is the best manager in the world, and the football he gets his team playing is simply the best of any team in the world. Where does he find all these kids? The team he has assembled will get better and better over the next 10 years, and will dominate the Premiership along with Man Utd. He the only manager in premiership history to have a transfer surplus. Although I do believe this will be his last season at the Emirates unless David Dein comes back.
Verdict – Put Your Money In the Bank UNSACKABLE
Aston Villa - Martin O’Neill
Never liked the football he has played as a manager, and never wanted him for the Newcastle job when he was linked. He has spent massively on what I call ordinary players i.e. Ashley Young and Nigel Reo-Coker 17 million between them. Will need a good start to the season, but I suspect the Villa fans will be more patient with their Chairman since deadly Doug has gone.
Verdict – Possible if after a very bad start to the season
Birmingham – Steve Bruce
Steve (I’m a Geordie You Know) Bruce never rated him as manager, spent quite a lot of money at Birmingham in their last stint in the premiership (Heskey – 6 Million????) and still got them relegated. Seem to be better prepared than their last stint in the premiership, but Brummie fans have wanted him out for a while and a bad start to the season will strengthen their calls.
Verdict – Likely after a Bad Start
Blackburn – Mark Hughes
I like sparked as a player and as a manager, no nonsense approach and he likes to play good football. Bought some good players in the summer, I expect Blackburn to be challenging for a European spot this season.
Verdict – Unlikely, done a great job from picking up the pieces from Souness, expect a good UEFA cup run from them
Bolton Wanderers – Sammy Lee
Little Sam has very hard job this season, after being given a chance after Big Sam’s departure he needs to keep up the high standards, which were left. He has struggled to bring in any noticeable signings and will be hard to make the big signings, which Big Sam was able to pull off. Needs to keep Anelka, or relegation dogfight will be upon them very quickly.
Verdict – Needs a good start, but Gartside will have patience in him after all he was the one who Bolton up to where they were not Big Sam??? Don’t expect a good UEFA Cup Run From Them
Chelsea – Jose Mourinho
Jose needs to deliver the champions league this season that is the jewel, which Roman wants, if he doesn’t get what he wants then it will be bye bye José and hopefully Abromovich will walk off as well. Needs a good-start to the season, they have built a better squad this season, the return of the 4-3-3 system is a good step, Daniel Alves will sort out the RB position they had many problems with last season.
Verdict – Only a early champions league knockout or bad start in the premiership will his job be not secure, but don’t bet on him being there next season
Derby County – Billy Davies
Good Manager, did an excellent job at Preston and were unlucky to go up a few seasons back. He spent big last season and it paid off, Derby played imo the best football in the championship. He has just signed a new contract, after months of speculation, favourites to go back down, but be better for it. Derby needs to keep hold of Giles Barnes, as he might hold the key to whether they have a chance of staying up or not.
Verdict – Not likely, just signed a new contract, they weren’t expected to go up, don’t expect miracles, but did an excellent job just getting to the premiership.
Everton – David Moyes
Everton were very impressive last season, they have been building a good squad the last 2-3 years and I’m expecting them to be challenging the top 8 again this season, haven’t spent much during the close season but Leighton Baines is a good signing. Very organised team, which showed last night when they by far the better team and deservedly won 3-1.
Verdict – Not a chance, Moyes done an excellent job imo, only distarous starts will his job be under threat, which hasn’t happened. Expect them to have a good UEFA Cup Run.
Fulham – Lawrie Sanchez
Fulham will be in a relegation dogfight, Coleman imo did a good job under the tight resources available to him and pulled off some great results in his time. Sanchez will have his work cutout achieving the same success he had at international level in the premiership, no noticeable buys. They need Jamie Bullard fit, as he could prove pivotal in their quest to stay up.
Verdict – If you have a spare fiver, might be worth it
Liverpool – Rafa Benitez
Spent a fortune in the summer as he has in his previous summers, the pressure is on him this season. He needs to make the top 2 into a top 3. Needs a good start and good away form, as this was a problem in previous seasons. Chopped and changed frontline again, Torres is expensive and Babel not proven at these levels, big gamble if you ask me. Squad rotation policy is stupid, yes at the end of a season, but at the start it’s not needed, you only squad rotate when your plays need rest.
Verdict – Wont be sacked during the season, but if he doesn’t deliver again don’t expect him on being here next season.
Manchester City – Sven Goran Eriksson
Spent a lot on players he hadn’t even seen in the flesh, (seems a lot like Newcastle’s Old Transfer Policy), but he has bought quality, using his vast network of contacts, Eriksson was always a good club manager as if he saw a problem he would spend to sort it out. The problem I have is that he’s needed a lot of money to be successful, but expect city to be mid-table at least this year.
Verdict – Very Unlikely, He’s on 60k a week, expecting a decent season from city
Manchester United – Sir Alex Ferguson
Sir Alex spent heavily in the summer and definitely improved the overall quality of his, Nani and Anderson no doubt will be top quality signings, and Hargreaves will add quality to the CM and Tevez is an excellent striker. The pressure is on Sir Alex to make the next step up and win the Champions League, imo they have by now won it more than once. They are my favourites to win the title, but will they go one better than last season.
Verdict – Not a Chance In Hell, but he is getting on a bit; if he wins the Champions League don’t bet against it that he will announce his retirement at the top.
Middlesbrough – Gareth Southgate
Here is one of my favourites to be sacked early, boro have a poor team who play poor football and minus the fact they lost there best player to us, and haven’t replaced him to me shows that they are in for a long hard season. Southgate doesn’t have the money his predecessors had, and simply imo not experienced enough as a manager.
Verdict – Quite Likely the boro fans have never been convinced on him, and Gibson may bite the bullet if the pressure gets high.
Newcastle – Big Sam Allardyce
Sam will be given the season, and I believe he should be given 3 years at least to achieve his aims, which is to get into the top 4 and win trophies on a regular basis. He needs resources which hopefully big Mike Ashley will give to him, the signings he has made are excellent, and it was very promising start v Bolton, so lets hope for the best.
Verdict – Unlikely, unless MA wants his own way
Portsmouth – Harry Redknapp
Pompey went on a spending spree this summer in a bid to make the top 6 some of his signings have been very good, but the pressure will be on for at least a top 8 finish which I think is too much as they over-achieved last season.
Verdict – Put your cash in the bank, not likely although and if results don’t go to plan; the Russian owner might play some roulette with his manager.
Reading – Steve Coppell
Reading were what Wigan were the previous season a team that punched will above their weight, and will be in for a shock this season, but should still be comfortable. Steve Coppell is an underrated manager and has been successful in bringing team from lower divisions to the premiership but his reluctance to spend in the summer will be a bad-move. Still should be comfortable in mid-table
Verdict – Very Unlikely, done an excellent job at Reading and long will it continue.
Sunderland – Roy Keane
Keano has not bought the vast amount of top stars what Sunderland fans expected but he has brought in team players what he thinks will make them do well, don’ tell keano what do, this man has to be the most determined man in the world, and nothing less of success will do for him. Unfortunately the mackems should be safe enough, but may flirt with the possibility of relegation.
Verdict – Will be fine, more chance of boro getting a sell-out than keano getting the boot.
Tottenham – Martin Jol
Tottenham spent big and at the moment it isn’t going to plan. Two quite shocking performances v Sunderland and Everton, and Jol is under pressure. He spent big on Darren Bent, they didn’t need him and they are not playing him. The midfield is too weak and uncreative, defensively at times last night they looked a shambles. Tottenham will finish mid table at best imo.
Verdict – After the poor start, then he’s one of my favourites to be given the boot, a fiver could be worth it.
West Ham United – Alan Curbishley
After the lucky escape from relegation the hammers have spent a bit and curbs has put his money on the old Newcastle brat pack of bowyer, bellamy and dyer (who’s move is back on) along with Scott Parker (my views on parker will be made in another blog entry), I think this is doomed to fail. I like Curbishley as a person (my cousin knows his nephew) but I feel he will be under pressure to get results so the hammers are not pulled into another relegation fight, and I feel they will struggle just like last season.
Verdict – Another Bad Start and Curbs might get the same fate as his predecessor
Wigan – Chris Hutchins
Wigan are my favourites to go down, they have a complete useless manager and he unfortunately thought Titus bramble is good defender, big mistake. Bramble must of cost the toon more than 40 points in his 5 seasons at the club, an average of 8 points a season, that could have been difference between Europe and champions league in one season. They were lucky to stay up last season, and that was mainly down to Paul Jewell.
Verdict – Get a £10 on Hutchins as he has been sacked twice within 3 months, and has relegated sides before, my favourite for the dole queue.
