Two goals in the second half from strikers Michael Owen and Obafemi Martins seen a rotated Newcastle side overcome a potential banana skin at home against Barnsley. United imposed themselves early on dominating possession and creating several chances, in contrast, the championship outfit rarely threatened our back four, creating the odd half chance or two.
Owen scored his first competitive goal in twenty month when he met a well-timed Shola Ameobi pass to slot home. Martins then added four minutes before time with a somewhat acrobatic volley. With a couple of Premiership sides knocked out yesterday it’ll be interesting to see if United can get another ‘kind’ home tie when the draw is made shortly.
