Local derby? No. This game was never a local derby. The two places couldn't be further apart. I went to Middlesborough once, and I wasn’t impressed. There was a shortage of bins and the people didn’t smell too good. On the other hand, two of my good friends are smoggies (they don’t smell at all) and to say they’re excited about the season is an irony itself. They are quite frankly, shitting their pants.
I joked with one of the smoggies last night about the bizarre players Boro have acquired over the years; Emerson, Festa, Marinelli, Dorvia, Ravanelli and not forgetting, Hamilton Ricard. Their team this season is weak, and even with both Woodgate and Huth fit, I honestly can’t see them doing much. They were lucky against Fulham last week and looked poor against Blackburn the week before. Boro’s official website has a picture of new signing Mido clinching his fist in celebration with the headline ‘Mark Who?’ placed along side him - Their fans are more disillusioned than some of our own.
Rumours whispering around the Geordie grapevine this week are that both Emre and Owen are fit to start the game. Owen? Perhaps. Emre? Doubtful. Apparently he came off hurt in Turkey’s friendly mid-week, no surprises there, as the little schemer has been tormented with injuries since he joined the club. It’s a shame, as on his day he has the creative spark United were so clearly missing against Villa last Saturday. Wherever Big Sam persists with his favoured 4-3-3 formation remains to be seen, but I’m predicting a comfortable 2-0 victory against a very frail Boro outfit. Nothing less please, lads.
